Day 18: But Be filled with the spirit
The apostle Paul wrote against the backdrop of pagan worship. One of the gods worshipped by the people who lived in Ephesus was Bacchus (also known as Dionysus), whose worship involved drunken orgies. Knowing this puts these verses in their context.
Ephesians 5:15-20 – “Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise— making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit: speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,”
PRAY: Spend a few minutes reflecting on the world early Christ followers lived in. Thank God that we live in a kinder world. Note what a spirit filled person acts like. Tell God you are determined to behave like that today as you rely on the continual filling of His Spirit in you.
