One of the most beautiful experiences for a mother is that of nursing her baby. The bond that mothers and their babies share is so perfectly synced; the baby’s eyes can focus exactly the distance of his face and hers. The nutritional content of the mother’s milk is exactly right for what the baby needs when the baby needs it. The created being nurtured, protected, and nourished by its creator (or at least by the one from whom he came). But, then the baby doesn’t need its mother’s milk anymore. The psalmist was pondering this when he penned,
Psalm 131–Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I do not get involved with things too great or too wondrous for me. Instead, I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like a weaned child. Israel, put your hope in the Lord, both now and forever.

PRAY: A fresh passion might take you back to the place where you realize that you–like every other person who is in the world today–began completely dependent on the people who “made” you. Consider how dependent God wants you to be on Him. Talk to Him about your dependence. Now, consider what the psalmist meant by inserting the “weaned child” into this song. Perhaps God wants you to sit with Him a bit even though your hunger is satisfied
